William S Burroughs rare books. Signed books and first editions by William S Burroughs. Boroughs was one of the original beat writers and co-wrote several books with fellow beat Jack Kerouac.
A lot of William S Burroughs's writing is semi-autobiographical. In particular, a lot of it drawns upon his experiences as a heroin addict. During this time he lived all around the world incliuding in Mexico City, the South American Amazon and Tangier in Morocco, London, Paris, Berlin which gave him an interesting an unique insight. Hisl first novel, Junkie was published in 1953 to critical acclaim. However, William S Burroughs is probably best known for his third book which was called Naked Lunch. This was published in 1959. Naked Lunch was a highly controversial book which caused a lot of public debate and criticism. The book was even reviewed in a US courtroom in relation to sodomy laws. Along with fellow writer Brion Gysin, Burroughs pioneered the literary cut-up technique in books like The Nova Trilogy released between 1961 and 1964. Jack Kerouac famously described Burroughs the "greatest satirical writer since Jonathan Swift," a reputation he owes to his "lifelong subversion" of the moral, political and economic systems of modern American society, articulated in often darkly humorous sardonicism. J. G. Ballard said that William S Burroughs was "the most important writer to emerge since the Second World War,". Norman Mailer said that he was "the only American writer who may be conceivably possessed by genius." High praise indeed from some of Americas most famous authors!
