This page is dedicated to Rev W Awdry rare books. He is, of course, best known for creating the wonderful Thomas the Tank Engine and related characters which remains as popular today as it ever was. It brings together the rarest Rev. W. Awdry books, manuscripts and first editions for sale here along with Rev. W. Awdry historical documents. Content changes daily but we have seen rare first editions as well as signed letters and material from Rev. W. Awdry.
The Thomas the Tank engine series of stories were invented in 1943 to amuse the Rev Audry's son during a bout of measles. After writing The Three Railway Engines, Awdry built his son a model of one of the train characters, Edward, and some wagons and coaches, out of a broomstick various bits and pieces found around his home.Apparently his son also wanted a model of Gordon but Awdry thought that seemed a bit to hard to make, so instead he made a model of a little 0-6-0 tank engine. Awdry is quoted as saying: "The natural name was Thomas – Thomas the Tank Engine" and a legend was born. His son then asked for tales relating to Thomas the Tank Engine. Rev Awdry did so and these were eventually published in the legendary Thomas the Tank Engine book which was released in 1946.
The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
