John Fante was an LA based writer of Italian American heritage who was first published in the 1930's. Cited now as a major influence on Charles Bukowski, Fante's work is incredibly modern despite its years and on closer inspection has shown itself to be a major influence on many writers who followed. John Fante wrote about a semi-biographical character called Arturo Bandini in three of his books. He continued to write into the 1980's when he died. Fante still hasn't received the recognition he deserved, though two of his novels have been turned into movies (Wait until Spring, Bandini and Ask the Dust). His influence on the other beat writers (in addition to Bukowski who came long a little later) will probably never be properly measured. Most of his books weren't even published in the UK until later prints in the 1980's and 1990's (and beyond). Therefore, you may have to change the settings to search for US listings to see rare first editions of John Fante's novels which date back as far as the 1930's.
