Beryl Bainbridge rare books for sale. Beryl Bainbridge began to write in the 1960s and her early books were mainly based on things that had happened to her as a child. Her first novel was called Harriet Said. This was rejected by a number of publishers who apparently didn't like the central characters. Her second and third novels were published in 1967 and 1968 and were well received by literary critics but they didn't sell in the sort of numbers that would have made Bainbridge much in the way of money. However, the relative success of these two books did at least mean that Harriet Said was eventually published in 1972, four years after her third novel (Another Part of the Wood). Beryl Bainbridge wrote and had published another seven books in the 1970s. She was awarded the Whitbread Prize in 1977 for her fifth novel, Injury Time. She also wrote a screenplay based on her novel Sweet William and this was turned into a film of the same title in 1979. This also helped to boost her reputation and earning power as a writer.
She wrote a further eight books in the 1980's. The best known of these was An Awfully Big Adventure - possibly because this was turned into a movie in 1995 featuring Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant.
Bainbridge turned to historical fiction in the 1990s. These continued to be popular with critics but even better for her, they were alsocommercially successful. These historical fiction works included Every Man for Himself, about the 1912 Titanic disaster. Bainbridge again won the Whitbread Awards prize for best novel in 1996. Another historical novel was called Master Georgie which was set during the Crimean War. Another award followed for this when she won the 1998 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. Her last novel, According to Queeney, is a fictionalized account of the last years of the life of Samuel Johnson as seen through the eyes of Queeney Thrale, eldest daughter of Henry and Hester Thrale. This was also commercially very succesful and popular with critics.
